Our Curriculum:

The Skylark Way

Curriculum Intent: Knowledge-Rich and Character-Driven

At Appleshaw St Peter’s, our curriculum is more than just a list of subjects; it is a journey of discovery. We provide a Knowledge-Rich curriculum that is deliberately sequenced to build a deep body of knowledge over time. This ensures that our pupils don’t just "do" school—they acquire the intellectual tools to understand and change the world.

Our Philosophical Heart: "We are Crew, not Passengers"

As part of the Skylark Federation, we adopt the EL Education model. We believe that learning is an active, demanding process.

  • Crew, not Passengers: Our students are active participants in their education, working together to reach collective goals.

  • The Primacy of Self-Discovery: We create "Learning Without Walls" opportunities where children discover they can do more than they ever thought possible.

  • Habits of Character: We explicitly teach perseverance, craftsmanship, and compassion, ensuring our "Knowledge-Rich" journey is anchored by strong moral values.

How Our Curriculum is Structured

To meet the needs of our mixed-age classes and ensure no child misses a vital piece of the puzzle, we operate a Two-Year Rolling Cycle (Cycle A and Cycle B). This allows us to maintain a rigorous, sequential approach to subjects like History, Geography, and Science while fostering a collaborative "Crew" environment across year groups.

The Three Dimensions of Student Achievement

We measure success through three lenses:

  1. Mastery of Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrating deep understanding and the ability to apply learning.

  2. Character: Developing habits that lead to becoming "fully rounded citizens."

  3. High-Quality Work: Creating "Great Work" that has authentic value to the community and the environment.
